Clairaudience

Clairaudience is a multi-channel sound installation by artist Caroline Devine for Grafton Park that responds to and augments the sonic environment of the park and its more-than-human inhabitants. Nature sounds recorded in Grafton Park, dawn chorus and field recordings are diffused through a bespoke playback system designed by Devine that includes speakers installed within the bushes and trees. The natural soundscape of the park including running water, wind, birds and insects is gradually amplified giving the impression that a visitor has increasingly hypersensitive hearing. Birdsong recorded at dawn is dramatically slowed down to explore a strange and unfamiliar sonic palette. The work explores the boundaries between sound and music and creates an ongoing dialogue with the natural soundscape.

Clairaudience was installed for one day in July 2025. It played between the hours of 3pm-8pm as part of MK Fringe.
